Toronto's Distillery District: The Best Place to Live in Downtown Toronto?

March 9, 2014 - Updated: August 19, 2014
When it comes to the city's iconic Distillery District, there really is no other place like it. In Toronto, in Canada or in North America. It's arguably one of the most coveted addresses in the city and for good reason!
Rich in History
The iconic distillery was founded by William Gooderham and James Worts in 1832 and by the late 1860s was the largest in the world. At the height of production they would make 7.6 million litres of delicious whiskey... enough for a party of two. Most importantly, this company played a huge role in the growth and future of the neighbourhood, city and nation.

Did you know?
In the 1990s, the Distillery District was the number one film location in Canada and the second largest outside of Hollywood. Over the years, more than 1,700 film and television productions have been shot here. Probably the best-known and most-nominated picture to be filmed at the Distillery District was Chicago in 2002, which was nominated for 13 Academy Awards!
A Yearly Draw
While the Distillery District hosts big ticket events like the Luminato arts festival, major art exhibitions and culinary competitions, this area's best known event is the annual Toronto Christmas Market. Hailed as one of the best of its kind in the world, the festival draws thousands of people to the Distillery and offers some of the best holiday food, festivities, entertainment and crafts this side of the North Pole! It's something you have to experience to believe...so this coming December, plan to head to the Distillery`s Christmas Market with family, friends, or that special someone. It`s pure holiday magic amongst old town charm!
What You'll Find Here
Aside from its rich history, Hollywood treatment and headliner events, this neighbourhood has a little something for everyone:
